Healthy Pie?

Yes, you read that right, this pie is not a cheat meal. It only tastes like one. We made clever substitutions in our recipe to ensure that our finished product was not only amazing, sweet and creamy, but also less than 300 calories per serving and less than 10 minutes to put together.

How to Make a Healthy Crust

Traditional pie crusts are full of refined carbs, sugar and fats. We didn’t want any of that in our pie crust. The first swap we tackled was the main ingredient: the graham crackers. We replaced traditional graham cracker with Kodiak Cakes Bear Bites. These tasty little crackers are made with whole grains, so they cut out the refined grains that would be in a normal pie. They do have a little bit of sugar in them, but the amount is small enough that we are comfortable with it.

Next we tackled the added fat from traditional pie crust. While some pie crusts only have a tablespoon of butter, some have as much as a quarter cup of melted butter added. That’s half a stick of butter. We didn’t want this in our pie either. Instead of butter, we used one of our favorite low fat tricks and swapped it out for 3 Tablespoons of plain, non-fat Greek yogurt. The texture and flavor are still fantastic, only now we are low fat instead of moderate fat.

The last ingredient we cleaned up was the sugar. Most pie crust recipes will call for up to a quarter cup of sugar. Not only is this overbearingly sweet, but it’s unhealthy. We swapped out cane sugar for granulated swerve, and reduced the amount down to two Tablespoons. We feel that this amount gives a balance sweetness, however, if you like your crust a little less sweet you can reduce the Swerve, or omit it completely.

Healthy Pie Filling

Next on our list was to clean up our pie filling. Traditional Oreo pie would call for full fat cream cheese, full fat whipped topping, powdered sugar, and Oreo cookies. We switched out the full fat options for lite cream cheese and lite whipped topping. There is a small amount of sugar in the whipped topping, so if you would rather swap it for a sugar-free variety, that’s ok too. We replaced the powdered sugar with powdered Swerve, and replaced the Oreos with Oreo flavored protein powder. We used Ghost brand because we like the taste and the nutrition label from this brand, but cookies and cream flavor by another brand will work. Just make sure to read the nutrition label.

How to Make Oreo Pie

  • Pulse the Bear Bites in a food processor until they are crumbs. Next, pulse in the Swerve and Greek yogurt, but just until combined.
  • Quickly press into a pie pan, or into a divided pan. If you work the crust too much it will become very dense.
  • With an electric mixer, blend together filling ingredients until smooth, then fold in whipped topping. Don’t use the electric mixer on the whipped topping.
  • Freeze or refrigerate until set, approximately 1-3 hours.

Tips for the best Oreo Pie

  • Don’t overwork the crust
  • If using Gelatin, add it to cold liquid first, then heat. Then when it’s cooled add to cream cheese.
  • Fold in the whipped topping.
  • Experiment with toppings. Catalina Crunch makes a good low carb cookie, or use reduced fat Oreo cookies. Use Walden Farms Chocolate Syrup or Enlightened Sugar Free Syrup to make your pie really stand out, without extra calories.
  • While any cookies and cream flavor protein powder will work, Ghost Whey Protein Powder we find to be, by far, the best.

Storing and Freezing Protein Oreo Pie

  • To store Lite Protein Oreo Pie, simply put it in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • To Freeze, put slices of pie into freezer safe containers and freeze for up to six months.
