Waffles and Chaffles

Nothing beats sinking your teeth into the crisp, fluffy goodness of a waffle. But, did you know that waffles can be healthy, as well as amazing? Regardless of your diet goals, there is a place for waffles in your game plan.

Healthy Waffle Toppings & Mix Ins

Great waffles deserve a great flavor addition. For sweet waffles, try mixing in some Lily’s Baking Chips – experiment with different flavors. Consider adding in a teaspoon of cinnamon before cooking, or sprinkle a blend of cinnamon and granular sugar substitute to make a snickerdoodle flavored waffle. Walden Farms makes several delicious, calorie and sugar free syrups, or experiment with some of their calorie free jellies or spreads. Their calorie free marshmallow fluff is particularly good. These waffles are even good sprinkled with Powdered Swerve, some fresh fruit, or some cream cheese. Looking for a savory waffle? Try adding in 1/4 cup cheddar cheese (low fat cheddar if using the low fat recipe), or substituting the mozzarella for cheddar if using the keto recipe, and 1/2 teaspoon jalapeno powder. 1 teaspoon each of garlic and onion powder also makes a great mix in. Sun dried tomato, basil and parmesan cheese is also a great flavor option. The possibilities go on and on.

Chaffles

You may or may not be familiar with the chaffle. For those of you who are asking: “What the heck is a chaffle?”, don’t worry, we got you covered. A chaffle is a keto waffle made with shredded mozzarella cheese, egg and sometimes a keto approved flour. Now, I know what you’re thinking, cheese in a waffle? Truth be told, however, you really cannot taste the cheese, and the texture mimics a real waffle. So for those of us who have a low carb goal, these versatile morsels are a game changer. They can be savory or sweet and can replace bread and buns, so the possibilities are endless. Our recipe adds in protein powder, because we can never really get enough protein. However, if you wish to omit the protein powder, the recipe will still work just fine without it.

Use a mini waffle maker for these tasty treats, like this one.
